An Introduction to Downtown Jersey City

Downtown Jersey City is located in Hudson County, New Jersey, along the Hudson River directly across from Manhattan. As part of Jersey City, which had a population of 292,449 according to the 2020 U.S. Census, Downtown is the city’s historic and commercial center. The neighborhood is known for its diverse community, vibrant dining and arts scene, waterfront parks, and convenient access to New York City via PATH trains, ferries, and light rail. Many residents are drawn to Downtown Jersey City for its urban lifestyle, walkability, and strong sense of community.

Downtown Jersey City's History

Downtown Jersey City’s history dates back to the 17th century when Dutch settlers established communities in the area as part of New Netherland. The neighborhood grew around Paulus Hook, a strategic location that played an important role during the Revolutionary War. During the 19th century, railroads, shipping, and industry helped transform the area into a major transportation and commercial hub. Since the late 20th century, Downtown has experienced significant redevelopment, becoming one of the region’s most sought-after residential neighborhoods.
